Hello! I'm Dr. Ashley (Ash-Lee) Payne - Scientist, Research Advocate, Public Health Expert, and creator!
I always knew at a young age that I would become a doctor. There was a deep curiosity for everything. If something went on, I wanted to understand how and why it happened and figure out an alternative. My eye wandered out more on our bodily functions and its unique responses. This was the birth of my passion for Research and Science.
My educational journey went differently than planned, but I appreciate the experiences. I attended Texas Southern University in 2003, majoring in pre-med Biology. Unexpected events occurred once I earned 90 credit hours and had to withdraw. I later transferred to Lonestar College-Cyfair and graduated with an Associate of Science in Biology in May 2011. Afterward, I continued to the University of Houston-Downtown, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in May 2012.
Knowing that I had to go further to pursue my dream, I was accepted to a dual MS/Ph.D. in Health Psychology program. In December 2017, I successfully defended my dissertation that evaluated the home-care factors and underlying issues associated with hospital readmission rates of psychiatric patients.
Currently, I am a Health Scientist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious diseases within the Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria. My current research incorporates science and ethical frameworks to detect, prevent and treat public and global health threats illnesses caused by parasites and also navigate through change in health equity and disparities.
A significant accomplishment is serving on the COVID-19 Response as Deputy Team Lead in the Data Analytics and Visualization Taskforce, where I led a team of data analysts reviewing and finalizing data products for the White House Data Staff and POTUS. These efforts provided sensitive information on race/ethnicity, bivalent boosters, community county levels, and data analysis findings of SARS-CoV-2 trends.
